The proposed site is bound on two sides by a designated conservation area and nature reserve. The building strikes a balance between having a unique recognisable character while sitting comfortably in its sensitive site.
Burgess Architects won an invited competition to design a new youth and community centre for a town in Oxfordshire.
The proposal is a new, multi-generational space for the residents to gather, learn, and play with a series of flexible open spaces served by a parallel strip of support facilities where the more heavily serviced spaces are concentrated.
With sustainability at its heart, the building will have a full timber structure, rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling, photovoltaic panels to generate electricity, and a sedum* roof which not only adds to the ecology of the area but attenuates flood water and helps regulate temperatures in the building. The greatest environmental proposition however is the inherently flexible nature of the spaces, allowing the building to change over time to meet the changing needs of the community.
