burgess architects have received planning permission for this ambitious side and front extension in Nunhead.
A similar scheme by a different architect had previously been vehemently rejected by Southwark council.
We worked hard on the big picture - setting the proposals in context; and on the detail - fine tuning the massing and fenestration to optimise the extension and terrace whilst avoiding detrimental impact too neighbours. We developed the new facades to balance sensitivity with the buildings nearby with a legible identity of their own. This gives the new building a character very much of its setting, whilst avoiding pastiche.
A detailed Design and Access Statement lays out this narrative to ensure the planning department understand the approach and their support for the scheme is unreserved.
